The first day of Islamic New Year 2022 (which is also called Arabic New Year 1444 or Hijri New Year 1444 or Islamic New Hijri Year 1444) is observed on the first day of Muharram 2022. It (Muharram) is the first month of the Islamic calendar. The New Islamic Hijri Year 1444 starts with the holy month of Muharram. The start of first Islamic Year begins in 622 AD when the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) migrated from Mecca to Medina. Islamic Hijri Year is also known as the Hijra. All the religious duties, including prayer, fasting in Ramadan, pilgrimage, and the dates of significant Islamic events are calculated according to the lunar calendar.

Islamic New Year 2022 or Islamic New Hijri Year 1444 will begin on the evening of Friday, July 29 and 1st Muharram 2022 will be on Saturday 30th July 2022. These dates may vary because the sighting of the moon varies from country to country.

Muharram has great significance in the Islamic Hijri Calendar. It is one of the four sacred months in which waging war is forbidden. Muharram has also great significance before the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’s time. Muharram has many characteristics associated with it.

• Fasting during the month
• The day of ‘Aashooraa’

 “The year is of twelve months, out of which four months are sacred: Three are in succession Dhul-Qa’ da, Dhul-Hijja and Muharram, and (the fourth is) Rajab…”(Bukhari 3197)

“The best fast after the fast of Ramadan is to fast in the month of Muharram.”
